EFTA and IFAT
Fair Trade Original contributes to the development of the socially responsible movement. We do so, for example, by participating in EFTA and IFAT.
EFTA, the European Fair Trade Association, is a network of fair trade organizations in Belgium, Germany, France, the United Kingdom, Italy, the Netherlands, Austria, Spain and Switzerland.
These organizations jointly import fair trade products from some 400 disadvantaged producer groups across Africa, Asia and Latin America.
EFTA’s first objective is to make fair trade importing more efficient and effective by means including:
- the exchange of information between the members relating to products and producers
- the facilitation of bilateral collaboration in trade
- the development of joint standpoints and joint representation to third parties
EFTA’s second objective is to promote fair trade amongst commercial and political decision-makers. Major activities within this context include the development of joint campaigns, a joint advocacy strategy, and the publication of a Fair Trade Yearbook.

IFAT, the International Federation for Alternative Trade, is the worldwide fair trade organization of producer organizations, importers and world stores. The objective of IFAT, which now has some 200 members, is to improve the living conditions of people in developing countries. The organization endeavours to achieve this objective by supporting organizations that offer just alternatives to unfair trade structures and practices. The members collaborate in developing an alternative and fairer way of doing business. IFAT serves as a promoter of fair trade and as a forum for the exchange of information between the member organizations.
